Requirements for Tent Building Permits:

Exceptions:

A tent or group of tents is exempt from the requirement to obtain a permit under Section 8 of the Ontario Building Code and is exempt from compliance with the Code provided that the tent or group of tents are:

 

  • not more than 60sqm (646sqft) in aggregate ground area;
  • not attached to a building; and
  • constructed more than 3m from other structures.

A permit is requires for a temporary tent that is larger than 60 square meters (lager than 646 feet square) when used for a public function. The following are the specific requirements:

  1. Site plan showing location of tent and the distance to any nearby structure including set back from road and property line.

  2. Drawings of tent(s), stamped by an engineer.

  3. Certificate of Flame Resistance complying with CAN/ULC S-109 or NFPA 701 Standard must accompany application.

  4. The application must state that the installation is temporary, the date of erection and the date of removal. 

  5. Portable Fire Extinguishers (2A-10BC rating) are required and must be mounted in conspicuous and easily accessible locations, near exits and cooking areas.

  6. Exit Signs are required for each designated exit.

  7. Smoking and Open Flame devices are not permitted under the tent unless provisions have been made for such activities under the Fire Safety Plan.

  8. Propane must not be stored under the tent.

  9. Compressed Gas Cylinders must be stored in racks, chained or tied securely. 

  10. The ground enclosed by the tent and not less than 3 m (9 ft. 10 in.) outside the tent shall be cleared of all flammable or combustible material or vegetation that will carry fire.

  11. Tents shall not be erected closer to 3m from property line.

  12. Interior floor plan may be required, showing location of exits, table, chairs and any fixtures as well as the location of any cooking facility.

  13. A Fire Safety Plan may be required for tents over 60m2 and must be posted in a conspicuous location.

  14. Occupancy load sings may be required to be posted for tents over 60 persons.

  15. When a fire alarm system is not provided with in conformance with the building code, a person will be employed for fire watch duty to patrol the area to ensure the means of egress are kept clear and to enforce the requirements of the Fire Safety Plan.

 

Liquor Licence: All tents used for serving alcohol will require a Building Permit regardless of size. Tent size shall be estimated at 12.5 sqft per person, in addition to all other areas in the tent and/or licensed area.

Work cannot begin without Building Permit.

Tents on City Parks land will also require a Park Permit and a Park Tent Permit (underground service location).

Every tent over 600 sqft on city property or commercial use (e.g. public walking under, car sale / furniture sale) will require a Building Permit.

Tents for private parties on private land do not require Building Permits.

Every tent over 600 sqft requires a permit, or if more then one tent comes to over 600 sqft then you will require building permit. Each tent on site will require separate building Permit (e.g. 3 tents, 3 permits, tents may not be joined).

Every tent over 2440 sqft will also require the inspection by an engineer. Arrangements will have to be made to meet Building Inspector, Engineer and representative from THOMPSON TENTS on site. Mileage plus time charges will apply. Engineering cost are approximately $200.00 plus mileage.
